Shin'ichi Chiaki, a perfectionist pianist and violinist at Momogaoka College of Music, dreams of becoming a conductor but cannot study abroad due to a crippling fear of flying. His ordered world collides with Megumi Noda — nicknamed Nodame — a free-spirited, spectacularly messy pianist who lives next door and plays entirely by ear. Nodame latches onto Chiaki as her self-declared boyfriend, and her untamed talent forces him to reconsider what musicianship can look like.
