Kakeru Kurahara, a talented but disillusioned college runner, is recruited by Haiji Kiyose into Chikusei-so, a run-down apartment that doubles as the Kansei University track club dormitory. Haiji has spent years assembling the ten residents needed to enter the Hakone Ekiden, one of Japan's most prestigious university relay marathons. Apart from Kakeru and himself, none of them have any running experience, and with the qualifying deadline approaching Haiji sets out to turn eight reluctant amateurs into competitive distance runners.
