Keiichi Maebara transfers to rural Hinamizawa in the summer of 1983 and quickly befriends his classmates Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Houjou. The village seems peaceful until Keiichi discovers a chain of unsolved deaths tied to Hinamizawa's annual Watanagashi festival and the local deity Oyashiro-sama. Initially marketed as a retelling of the 2006 anime, the series reveals itself as a sequel — familiar arcs replay with new divergences beneath the surface.
