In 2027 Kyoto, bookish high schooler Naomi Katagaki meets a man who claims to be his future self from ten years ahead. The older Naomi warns that his classmate Ruri Ichigyou will suffer a devastating accident and enlists his younger self to change her fate using Alltale, a vast system that records and simulates the city's data. As Naomi draws closer to Ruri through their shared love of books, the date of the accident approaches — and the rules of Alltale turn out to be less straightforward than his future self let on.
