In 2027 Kyoto, bookish high schooler Naomi Katagaki meets a man who claims to be his future self from ten years ahead. The older Naomi warns that his classmate Ruri Ichigyou will suffer a devastating accident and enlists his younger self to change her fate using Alltale, a vast system that records and simulates the city's data. As Naomi draws closer to Ruri through their shared love of books, the date of the accident approaches, and the rules of Alltale turn out to be less straightforward than his future self let on.
