Sixth-grader Haruo Yaguchi has nothing going for him except a near-godlike grasp of arcade fighting games, until his classmate Akira Ono — quiet, wealthy, top of the class — shows up at his usual cabinet and beats him at Street Fighter II thirty matches in a row. From that loss onward, Haruo chases a rematch through 1990s arcades while Akira keeps showing up wherever the next big release is, and convenience-store regular Koharu Hidaka gradually inserts herself into Haruo's orbit, tagging along from his arcade haunts to Akira's piano lessons.
