Bocchi Hitori is so crippled by social anxiety that she faints when overwhelmed and schemes elaborate plans to dodge any conversation. As middle school begins, her one friend, Kai Yawara, declares their friendship suspended until Bocchi befriends every single classmate at her new school. The first to fall is the blunt Nako Sunao, followed by the foreign student Sotoka, as Bocchi inches through the class one terrified introduction at a time.
