Bocchi Hitori is so crippled by social anxiety that she can barely speak to anyone. Before middle school, her only friend, Kai Yawara, declares she won't speak to Bocchi again until Bocchi befriends every classmate at her new school. Forced to keep that promise, Bocchi starts with the tough-looking but kind Nako Sunao and works her way around the room. Along the way she picks up Aru Honshou, the class vice-rep who guards her appearances, and Sotoka Rakita, a cheerful classmate from abroad who insists she is a ninja.
