In an alternate Cold War where the Union of Zirnitra races a rival superpower to put the first human in space, the program's secret candidate is Irina Luminesk, a vampire the state intends to send up before risking a human life. Lev Leps, a demoted cosmonaut trainee, is assigned as her handler and ordered to treat her as a test subject. As Lev runs Irina through the same brutal training he endured, he begins to see the determined girl behind the experiment.
