In a Westernizing alternate Japan where humans and spirits share the land, the government forms a Ministry of Spirit Affairs and pairs army officers with half-spirit girls. Zakuro, a sharp-tongued half-spirit with fox ears, is partnered with Second Lieutenant Kei Agemaki — a soldier who turns out to be terrified of the very spirits he is meant to work alongside. As they investigate disturbances together, Zakuro's contempt for his cowardice slowly tangles with feelings she can't quite name.
