Fourteen-year-old Yoshimori Sumimura is the heir to a line of kekkaishi, barrier masters who guard the sacred ground beneath his school by trapping and destroying the ayakashi spirits drawn to it. Each night he works the grounds beside Tokine Yukimura, the older heir of a rival neighboring family with the same duty, his raw power matched against her precise control. The site, called Karasumori, strengthens any ayakashi that linger there, making the nightly patrols a steady test the two cannot abandon.
