Fleeing his elder brother's pursuit in twelfth-century Japan, the warrior Kuro and his retainer Benkei take shelter with a reclusive woman named Kuromitsu. As Kuro falls for her, he learns she is an immortal who survives on blood, and a wound drives him to drink hers to live. He wakes centuries later in a ruined Japan ground down by the Red Army, sought out by an underground movement called Haniwa.
