Johnny Joestar, a paralyzed former jockey, enters the Steel Ball Run, a transcontinental horse race across 1890s America that promises a fortune to whoever reaches the far coast first. He signs up after watching Gyro Zeppeli use spinning steel balls to make his legs twitch for the first time in years. Riding alongside the racers, Johnny chases the secret of Gyro's Spin while the contest hides a deeper purpose tied to relics scattered along the route and the ambitions of President Funny Valentine.
