Ryohei Arisu, an aimless high schooler who would rather game than face exams, is out one night with his friends Karube and Chota when a blinding flash empties the streets of Tokyo around them. They wake in the Borderland, a deserted mirror of the city where survival depends on clearing deadly games, each rated by playing-card suit and number. Every game carries a time limit and a lethal penalty for losing, and the visas the players win only buy them a few more days before the next round.
