Kevin Yamagata draws Billy Bat, a hit detective comic, in postwar America, until he learns he may have unknowingly copied the bat character from an image he saw during the Occupation of Japan. He flies to Japan to track down the original creator and ask permission, and instead lands in a chain of killings and cover-ups that reach back across centuries. The same bat figure keeps surfacing at moments of upheaval, and Kevin's pages start to read like prophecy.
