In the heart of Los Angeles' Chinatown, the elegant Count D runs a pet shop that sells far more than ordinary animals. Each creature takes the shape of a customer's deepest longing, and each is handed over under a contract of three strict conditions; break one, and the shop disclaims all responsibility for what follows. Detective Leon Orcot, tracing a string of strange deaths back to the shop's door, is convinced Count D is behind them and sets out to prove it, returning case after case to spar with the unflappable proprietor.
