Alisa Mikhailovna Kujou, a half-Russian, half-Japanese honor student known at school as Alya, keeps a cool distance from her slacker deskmate Masachika Kuze while muttering affectionate lines at him in Russian. What she doesn't know is that Masachika understands every word and simply plays dumb. Their needling routine builds toward Alya running for student council with Masachika as her partner, a campaign that starts pulling up the tangled history the two of them share.
