Yozo Oba moves through life convinced he can never reveal his true self, hiding his dread of other people behind a mask of clowning and forced laughter. From a withdrawn childhood into a young adulthood of drink, women, and ruin, his memoranda trace a slow unravelling. Junji Ito adapts Osamu Dazai's novel, going so far as to write Dazai himself into the story as the man who receives Yozo's account.
