Kaiji Itou drifts through a dead-end life in Tokyo, scraping by on petty jobs while drinking, smoking, and gambling away what little he has. His routine collapses when loan shark Yuuji Endou comes to collect on a debt Kaiji once co-signed for a former coworker. Endou offers a brutal choice: pay it back over ten years, or board the gambling ship Espoir for a single night and risk everything to clear it at once. Fukumoto's manga opens with Kaiji stepping aboard.
