Chakuro, a fourteen-year-old archivist on the Mud Whale, records every event of the drifting island as it crosses an endless sea of sand. Most of its inhabitants are short-lived users of an emotion-fueled power called thymia, and Chakuro is set on leaving a better record than his predecessors did. When a scouting party finds Lykos, a quiet girl on a derelict island who seems to know more about the Mud Whale than its own people do, the isolation ends.
