In a Tokyo where flesh-eating ghouls pass for human, bookish college student Ken Kaneki survives a date with a girl who turns out to be one of them — and an emergency transplant from her leaves him a half-ghoul, craving human flesh while still feeling human inside. Unable to stomach what he now is, Kaneki is taken in by the ghouls running the café Anteiku, where Touka Kirishima and the others teach him to live between two worlds that hunt each other.
