Osamu Tezuka retells the life of Siddhartha, the Shakya prince who renounces his throne to seek an end to suffering and becomes the Buddha. Across an ancient India ruled by rigid caste and split between the warring kingdoms of Kosala and Magadha, he crosses paths with invented companions such as Tatta, a low-caste boy who can possess animals, and the slave Chapra. Tezuka weaves real scripture through original characters into a sweeping account of one man's road toward enlightenment.
