Kanata Akagi, a boy from a faded line of mages who chose an ordinary life over magecraft, is sorting his late grandfather's belongings when he drops a strange hourglass and is thrown 75 years into the past. He lands in an imperial-era Tokyo on the brink of a Holy Grail War, where a light novel he was carrying acts as a catalyst and summons the Saber-class Servant Okita Souji. To her irritation, the Command Spells bind to Kanata's hand instead of hers, forcing the reluctant pair into a war over the Grail.
