In the 1910s, Kodo Iwamoto, a student at army-run Suho Middle School, travels the country on military orders to investigate the uncanny, starting with a village where black snow is said to fall. There he meets a boy who takes his own strange power for an illness; Iwamoto shows him what it really is and writes him a recommendation to the school. Every stop turns up another mystery and another young person marked the same way.
