Takaki Tōno and Akari Shinohara become close friends after she transfers to his Tokyo elementary school, but her family's move to Tochigi pulls them apart. Told across three episodes spanning childhood to adulthood, the film follows Takaki as the distance between them grows — from a winter train journey to reach her, through his isolated high school years on Tanegashima, to his adult life in Tokyo where the memory of Akari still lingers.
