Thirteen-year-old Rachel Gardner wakes in the basement of an abandoned building with no memory of how she got there. On the floor above, she encounters Zack, a bandaged serial killer wielding a scythe, and the two strike a deal: Zack will grant Rachel's wish to die if she helps him escape. Floor by floor, they fight past the building's other residents — each a disturbed captor with their own fixation — as Rachel's calm acceptance of death and Zack's violent impulses bind them into an unlikely partnership.
