Tohru Honda, a recently orphaned high-schooler living in a tent to avoid burdening anyone, stumbles onto land owned by the Sohma family and is taken in by the novelist Shigure Sohma. At school, she already knows the reserved Yuki Sohma — the prince of their class — but her arrival at the Sohma household reveals a family secret: thirteen members are cursed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac, transforming into their zodiac animal when embraced by someone of the opposite sex. As Tohru befriends more Sohmas, including the hot-tempered Kyo, she learns each carries the weight of the curse differently.
