Chie Satonaka is the landlady of a small bathless apartment building, a job that reached her along with the cooking and cleaning she does for her tenants, and she is starting her first year of middle school. Maeda, an office worker who moved in on taking his first job, keeps finding her inside his own room with a spare key, a pressure cooker and dinner. Chie's school friends and the shopping-street regulars who have known her since she was small fill out the rest of the building's days.
