Ogami Ittō, the shōgun's official executioner, returns home to find his wife Azami and household slaughtered in a plot by Yagyū Retsudō to seize his post. Branded a traitor and stripped of his rank, Ogami takes to the road as an assassin for hire, pushing a wooden cart that carries his infant son Daigorō and a hidden arsenal. The two travel feudal Japan as Lone Wolf and Cub, taking contracts and edging toward revenge against the Yagyū clan.
