In a vast cliff-top mansion, faceless shadow nobles live attended by Living Dolls who mirror their masters' personalities and constantly sweep up the soot the shadows shed when their emotions stir. Kate, a young shadow whose grief and anger produce especially heavy soot, is paired with a cheerful new doll she names Emilico, and the two begin training for the household's coming-of-age trial. Inside the mansion's rules, neither doll nor shadow may ask why the soot exists, who runs the house, or what lies past its walls.
