On a vacation to a lunar carnival in the year 5053, the teenage Viscount Albert de Morcerf falls into the orbit of a glittering nobleman known only as the Count of Monte Cristo. Albert brings the stranger home to Paris as the guest of his prominent family. The Count accepts every invitation his enemies' children extend, working his way into the social calendar of the same Parisian elite who once destroyed him as the sailor Edmond Dantès. Alexandre Dumas's revenge novel is transplanted here into a baroque space-age future and told from Albert's side, as he starts to sense something wrong beneath his new friend's charm.
