A thousand years after humanity fled Earth from the shape-shifting Gauna, the seed ship Sidonia drifts through deep space carrying a culture that has learned to clone its citizens and photosynthesize sunlight. Underground-raised Nagate Tanikaze, who knows piloting only from an old training rig built by his grandfather, is conscripted into the Garde mecha corps just as a new Gauna closes on the ship. Squadmates like the human-Gauna hybrid Izana Shinatose and ace pilot Shizuka Hoshijiro draw him into Sidonia's defense.
