In a future where human-shaped androids called hIEs serve society, high school student Arato Endo treats them as equals rather than tools. Attacked one night by a rogue hIE, he is saved by Lacia, a highly advanced unit who escaped the Memeframe corporation along with four others of her class. Lacia strikes a deal: she will serve him if he takes full responsibility as her owner, binding Arato to a machine whose true purpose he cannot read.
