Kafka Hibino once swore with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro that they would both join the Defense Force and rid Japan of the giant kaiju that ravage it. Years later Mina commands an elite unit while Kafka, repeatedly failing the entrance exam, cleans up monster corpses for a living. When a small kaiju forces its way into his body, Kafka gains the power to transform into a humanoid monster himself, dubbed Kaiju No. 8, and resolves to enlist and fight beside Mina while hiding what he has become.
