Tsubasa Shiki transfers from Tokyo to Kitami in Hokkaido in the dead of winter and meets his new classmate Minami Fuyuki, a local gal who takes the city boy under her wing on the spot. Minami walks him through Hokkaido life, from the dialect words namara and menkoi to regional food like imomochi and pastimes like wakasagi ice fishing. Everyday outings with Minami and their schoolmates carry Tsubasa through his first year up north, cold and all.
