Self-styled mad scientist Rintaro Okabe runs a tiny Akihabara lab with his friends Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hashida, where they tinker with gadgets for fun. They stumble onto something real when a modified microwave starts sending text messages into the past, and Okabe crosses paths with prodigy researcher Kurisu Makise. As their "PhoneWave" begins altering events, the lab's experiments draw the attention of SERN, an organization that has been secretly pursuing time travel of its own.
