In a nation governed by a National Prosperity Law, one in a thousand schoolchildren is secretly inoculated with a capsule that will kill them between the ages of 18 and 24. Twenty-four hours before death, the chosen receive an ikigami, a death notice delivered by a government messenger. Kengo Fujimoto carries these notices for a living, watching strangers spend their final day while the weight of the job he serves slowly bears down on him.
