As Japan slides into the chaos of the Sengoku era, Tama and her younger brother Jinka travel the land punishing katawara, the supernatural beings who live alongside humans in uneasy tension. Tama is a youko fox spirit who loves humankind despite being katawara herself; Jinka, human by birth, borrows her power and wants nothing more than to shed his humanity. A cowardly swordsman named Shinsuke attaches himself to them hoping to learn strength, and the group frees a girl called Shakugan from monks experimenting on human beings.
