Mami Tomoe fights witches alone in Mitakihara until the brash Kyouko Sakura becomes her partner, and the two build an uneasy bond over what a magical girl owes anyone but herself. This spin-off manga retells the events around the magical-girl contracts from Mami and Kyouko's side, on a timeline that branches away from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and draws Sayaka Miki in as their ideals pull apart.
