In the secluded village of Sotoba, a string of unexplained deaths begins the same summer the reclusive Kirishiki family moves into the hilltop mansion. Dr. Toshio Ozaki, the village's only physician, notices the deaths follow a pattern no disease can explain, while high schooler Natsuno Yuuki — who resented being dragged to rural life — becomes a target after his classmate Megumi Shimizu disappears. As Ozaki's medical investigation and Natsuno's personal stakes converge, they uncover creatures the villagers call shiki — risen corpses feeding on the living.
