Luo Xiaohei, the young cat spirit training under Wuxian, one of the few humans with enough spiritual power to serve the Guild as an executor, sees their peaceful routine end when the Guild elders summon his master. Humans have massacred every spirit at a remote Guild branch, and Wuxian is the prime suspect. With his master in custody, Xiaohei joins Luye, an earlier disciple of Wuxian, as she runs an investigation of her own, and the deeper they dig, the closer humans and spirits come to open war.
