Teenage fighter Baki Hanma trains his body to the breaking point in pursuit of a single goal: to surpass his father, Yujiro Hanma, said to be the strongest man alive. His search for stronger opponents leads him to a hidden underground arena beneath the Tokyo Dome, where masters of wildly different martial arts meet in no-rules bouts. There the promoter Mitsunari Tokugawa stages the Maximum Tournament to settle who is the strongest fighter in the world, pulling Baki into matches that push his still-growing skills to their limit.

Noriko Tachiki, an ordinary Japanese schoolgirl, is dropped without warning into a fantasy world of golden forests and dragons after an explosion near her home. Unable to speak the language, she is rescued by a lone warrior named Izark, whose cursed power makes everyone fear him. Izark is told he must kill the prophesied Awakening, a being said to control a world-ending Sky Demon, only to realize the Awakening is Noriko herself.
