Light Yagami, a brilliant and bored high school student, finds a black notebook dropped by the shinigami Ryuk: anyone whose name is written in it dies. Convinced he can purge the world of criminals and rule it as a god, Light begins a secret killing spree. His campaign draws out a reclusive detective known only as L, who matches wits with him while neither knows the other's true identity.
