As an elementary schooler, Shoya Ishida leads the bullying of Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf girl who transfers into his class, until the harassment goes far enough that he becomes the one shunned for it. Years later, isolated and weighed down by guilt, Shoya tracks down Shoko and begins learning sign language to apologize for what he did. Reconnecting with her, and with classmates from those years, forces him to face how much harm was done and whether the two of them can build something different.
