Chihaya Ayase falls for competitive karuta after a transfer student, Arata Wataya, shows her the speed of the card game and the dream of becoming Queen, its top female player. Years later in high school she reunites with childhood friend Taichi Mashima and founds the Mizusawa Karuta Club, recruiting members to compete as a team. With Arata far away and Taichi at her side, Chihaya trains to climb the national ranks one match at a time.
