Orphaned teenager Takashi Natsume has spent his life seeing yokai that no one else can, and being shunned for it. When he inherits the Book of Friends from his late grandmother Reiko, he learns the notebook holds the names of dozens of spirits she once bound to her will. Natsume decides to release each name back to its owner, and gains a bodyguard in Madara, a powerful yokai who poses as a stout cat Natsume calls Nyanko-sensei while waiting to claim the book for himself.
