In the dull industrial town of Mabase, twelve-year-old Naota Nandaba endures a listless routine — until Haruko Haruhara plows into him on a Vespa and cracks him over the head with a bass guitar. The blow opens a portal in Naota's skull that begins spawning giant robots, drawing the attention of Medical Mechanica, a sinister corporation whose factory looms over the town. As Haruko manipulates Naota to get what she wants — the power of the Pirate King Atomsk — Naota's suppressed emotions about his absent brother, his brother's ex-girlfriend Mamimi, and his own adolescence erupt alongside the mecha.
