In the dull industrial town of Mabase, twelve-year-old Naota Nandaba endures a listless routine, until Haruko Haruhara plows into him on a Vespa and cracks him over the head with a bass guitar. The blow opens a portal in Naota's skull that begins spawning giant robots, drawing the attention of Medical Mechanica, a sinister corporation whose factory looms over the town. As Haruko manipulates Naota to get what she wants (the power of the Pirate King Atomsk), Naota's suppressed emotions about his absent brother, his brother's ex-girlfriend Mamimi, and his own adolescence erupt alongside the mecha.
