Akira Hojo and Chiaki Asami survived the Cambodian killing fields together as boys and emerged with a single pact: to seize control of a stagnant Japan and remake it as their own sanctuary. They split the work in two. Hojo climbs through the Tokyo underworld as a yakuza, while Asami pursues a seat in the National Diet as one of its youngest members. From opposite sides of the law, the two friends push their plan forward against entrenched politicians, rival bosses, and anyone who stands between them and power.

In a future Japan reduced to desert by catastrophe, twins Sarasa and Tatara are born in a remote village under a prophecy that names Tatara the "child of destiny" who will overthrow the tyrant Golden King and his sons. When soldiers kill Tatara, Sarasa cuts her hair and takes his name and his role, leading the rebellion in his place so her people don't lose hope. Disguised as a boy, she rises as the figurehead of the Tatara army.

The series is the high-school prequel to Great Teacher Onizuka, following Onizuka before he ever stepped into a classroom.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is a red-haired delinquent with no interest in school until he meets Haruko Akagi, who assumes the towering first-year must play basketball. To get close to her, Sakuragi joins the Shohoku High basketball team, where captain Takenori Akagi drills him in fundamentals and the sharpshooter Hisashi Mitsui and ace rival Kaede Rukawa round out the lineup. With raw athleticism but zero technique, Sakuragi sets his sights on carrying Shohoku to the national tournament.

In the Scrapyard, a grimy city built from the refuse that rains down from the floating utopia of Zalem, cyber-doctor Daisuke Ido finds the discarded head and torso of a female cyborg still alive in the trash. He rebuilds her and names her Gally after his dead cat, but she wakes with no memory of who she was. As her body relearns the lost martial art Panzer Kunst, Gally takes up Ido's secret trade as a Hunter-Warrior, claiming bounties on the criminals who prey on the Scrapyard while she searches for the truth of her past.
