In 1864 Kyoto, sixteen-year-old Chizuru Yukimura disguises herself as a man to search for her missing father Kodo, a doctor. After witnessing a killing she is taken in by the Shinsengumi, who are also hunting Kodo over the Water of Life, an elixir that turns those who drink it into bloodthirsty berserkers called Furies. Kept under the watch of Toshizo Hijikata and his swordsmen, Chizuru is drawn into the political violence of the late shogunate.
