A Wavemaster who calls himself Tsukasa wakes inside the online game The World with patchy memory and, unlike every other player, no way to log out. As the player-run Crimson Knights begin to suspect him of hacking, Tsukasa keeps to the game's quieter zones, accompanied by a strange cat-like creature and pressed by other players to explain how he is trapped. The mystery of why he cannot leave, and what the rumored Key of the Twilight has to do with it, pulls a wary circle of players toward him.
