Shy transfer student Mikado Ryugamine moves to Tokyo's Ikebukuro district at the urging of his childhood friend Masaomi Kida, hoping for an exciting city life. On his first night he glimpses the Black Rider, an urban legend who turns out to be Celty Sturluson, a headless Irish dullahan working as an underground courier while she searches for her stolen head. As Mikado is drawn toward a faceless online gang called the Dollars, his path crosses Ikebukuro's most dangerous residents.
